Be Strong and Courageous
“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” Joshua 1:9
This is our theme for the school year. Most of our students in the Seeds class are new, and for many, this is their very first time being away from their families, even just for a few hours.

As teachers of the youngest class, this season calls for patience, understanding, and a whole lot of extra TLC (tender loving care). Our goal is to help these little ones feel safe and comfortable so that they will look forward to coming to school each day.
Of course, this stage comes with challenges. Separation anxiety is real for our “terrific twos.” At times, a couple of them would cry at the same time, calling out for their parents. Some children take longer to adjust, and it can feel discouraging. But in these moments, we are reminded of God’s grace shining through our school community—a community where we can pray together, encourage one another, and walk alongside each other with love and accountability.
So, what does this verse mean for our little Seeds? It reminds us that God is with them as they take their very first steps into school life. From bravely saying goodbye at drop-off, to learning to sit during Circle Time, to making new friends and learning how to take turns and share…these are big milestones for two-year-olds! Through it all, we want them to know that they are never alone: God is with them, and their teachers and friends are cheering them on.

One way we introduced this verse in Bible class was through the story of the Wall of Jericho. Using cardboard blocks, the children built a big wall, then marched around it while singing the song “7 Steps.” Finally, they shouted together, “BE STRONG AND COURAGEOUS!” and knocked the wall down. What two-year-old wouldn’t enjoy the thrill of building and breaking blocks?

Moments like these remind us that even at such a young age, children can begin to grasp God’s Word in ways that are both meaningful and fun. And as they laugh, play, and learn, we pray that these seeds of faith will grow strong roots in their hearts.
