Learning Support

Here at Yokohama Christian School we believe that every child deserves access to a quality education. Based on our Christian faith, we see each student as a child of God with unique capabilities. Our goal is to be an inclusive environment for children of ranging abilities.

We realize that many larger schools are unable to offer the specialized attention for children who have different learning needs. We work as a team with parents to ensure that students’ needs are met and that they are part of a warm, nurturing community of learners.

At YCS we have two types of formal learning support:
1) behavioral/developmental/learning differences and
2) English language. (Use this update for top of page)

Types of Learning Support

Learning Support

For the first type of learning support, the process of admissions requires parents to be as transparent about their child’s schooling history and diagnosis history. It is our goal to have an accurate picture of the student’s prior schooling experiences, support recommendations and family support before making an admissions decision. We understand that finding a good international school that can accommodate different needs is a challenge and want to rise to the challenge if the fit is good.

English as an Additional Language (EAL) Support

For English language support, students are identified either at admission time or through the fall/spring assessments that are performed each school year. Some students require support for all areas – reading, writing, speaking and listening. Other students may need specific support with one of those areas of language in order to succeed at YCS. Students are able to have one-on-one lessons, group lessons, and other support as needed through this program.

YCS is diligently working on ways to improve our support and meet students and families where they are on their academic journey.
We are always looking for ways to improve and help students reach their full potential.
